Develop new skills, soar to great heights, and unlock a brand new world.

Cubs is Scouts for young people aged 8 to 10½. We meet on Tuesdays from 18:30 to 19:45.

Get stuck in, Give it a Go.

Cubs is where curiosity turns into adventure, with bigger challenges, new skills and plenty of ways to get involved.

Every week, our Cubs take on a wide range of activities designed to get them thinking, moving and trying something new. We might be outdoors exploring, learning a practical skill, getting creative or working together to solve a challenge.

Along the way, Cubs build confidence, independence and resilience while discovering what they’re capable of. There are badges to work towards, adventures to share and plenty of opportunities to learn by giving things a go.

Whether they’re trying something for the first time or taking their skills to the next level, Cubs have the space to grow at their own pace. And with a group of friends beside them, there’s always someone to share the adventure with.

Meet our amazing Cub Scout Leader's

Andrew "Akela" Head

Cub Scout Team Lead

Andrew brings plenty of experience and adventure to our Cub team. As a Cub leader, Andrew helps plan and run activities that encourage young people to try new things, build confidence and develop practical skills.

Andrew is also a NRA rifle permit holder and ran our Air Rifle Club, helping young people develop focus, patience and safe handling skills in a structured environment. Away from the group, he also supports the district with its Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme, helping young people take on challenges, build independence and work towards their goals.

Cubs Volunteer Vacancy

Assistant Cub Scout Leader & Parent Helper

If you are interested in helping out the Cub Scouts each week, please get in contact with us to see what role best fits you.

Volunteer Vacancies

Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. They give their time, energy and enthusiasm to create opportunities for young people to learn new skills, build confidence, make friends and enjoy adventures. From leading activities and camps to helping behind the scenes, every volunteer makes a difference. Without them, Scouting simply wouldn’t be possible - and we’re incredibly grateful for everything they do.

We work towards the Chief Scout's Silver award

Every challenge is a chance to grow, explore and discover what you can achieve.

Being a Cub is all about giving new things a go, growing in confidence and learning along the way. From their very first day in the pack, Cubs can start earning badges and awards, beginning with their World Membership Badge and going from there. There are plenty to work towards, and Cubs can earn them at their own pace. By the time they leave the pack and move on to Scouts, they’ll have plenty of achievements to show for their time with us.

Earning challenge awards

Challenge awards are designed to do exactly what their name suggests - challenge you. They encourage Cubs to step outside their comfort zone, try something new and take on experiences they might not normally choose.

We’ll support our Cubs every step of the way, creating and taking part in a wide range of activities and events that help them work towards their badges while completing their challenges. As they approach the end of their time in Cubs, we’ll also set them a personal challenge to work towards before they leave the pack.

Earning activity badges

We also recognise the progress and effort our Cubs put in outside of their regular meetings, activities and events. Many of the activity badges give young people the opportunity to show off the things they enjoy doing in everyday life, while encouraging them to try new things and discover new interests.

How old are Cub Scouts?

Ages 8 to 10½, with some flexibility to make sure every young person moves on when the time is right.

Cub Scouts are usually young people aged between 8 and 10½, although we can offer some flexibility within the guidelines issued by Scouts. We can welcome young people from 7½ where they’re ready to join us, and we’ll usually talk this through with you as part of the joining process.

When it comes to moving on to Scouts, we also understand that there isn’t always a single perfect moment. Sometimes it makes sense for friendship groups in Cubs to move up together, helping young people feel comfortable and supported as they start their next adventure. Where needed, we can make allowances for Cubs to stay with us until 11 years old.

If your young person is under 7½, don’t worry - you can still add them to our New Member Waiting List. We’ll be in touch when they reach the right age and we’re ready to offer them a place in our Cub Pack.

Join Cubs at 1st Billesley Scout Group

Take the next step in their Scouting journey with new challenges, new skills and plenty of adventures along the way.

Joining Cubs is a great way for your young person to continue their Scouting journey. They’ll have the chance to make friends, try new things, take on bigger challenges and discover what they can do, all while being part of a welcoming group.

Cubs is open to everyone, and we’ll always do our best to make sure every young person can take part. If your young person needs any support to get involved, get in touch with us. By talking early, we can work together to help make their experience the best it can be.

What you’ll need to join

The first step is to add your young person’s details to our New Member Waiting List. When they reach the right age and a space becomes available in our pack, we’ll get in touch and invite them to their first session.

Their group red polo shirt is included as part of the joining fee. You’ll need to order their remaining uniform through the Scout Store before they’re invested into the section.

Start something they’ll remember

By joining Scouts, your young person becomes part of a worldwide movement where they can build confidence, learn practical skills, make friends and experience new adventures. Their first two sessions are free, giving them a chance to discover what Cubs is all about before deciding to join.

After this, a joining fee and membership fee will apply. We’ll share all the details with you before your young person joins us, so you know exactly what to expect.

Alternatively, if you have any questions, would like to arrange a visit or want to speak to a member of our team before deciding, you can get in touch with us using any of the options below.
