The newest member of the Scouts family tree, for our youngest ever Scouts

Squirrels is Scouts for young people aged 4 to 6. We meet on Tuesdays from 16:45 to 17:30.

Small People, Big Adventures.

Squirrels is where the Scouting journey begins - with new friends, new skills and plenty of things to discover.

Every week, our Squirrels get stuck into something new. We play, make, build, explore and learn together, giving young people the chance to try things for themselves and discover what they enjoy.

From getting outdoors and trying new activities to making things, learning practical skills and working as a team, there’s always something happening. It’s all about having fun, building confidence and taking those first steps towards becoming more independent.

Most importantly, Squirrels is a place to belong. Our leaders create a friendly, welcoming space where every young person can be themselves, make friends and have a go - whether it’s their first time or they’re already raring to get stuck in.

Meet our amazing Squirrel Scout Leader's

None of this would be possible without the dedication, care, and planning they put into the section

Simon "Roly" Brooks

Squirrel Scout Team Lead

Simon helps our Squirrels get stuck in and discover something new each week. As part of the Squirrel team, Rolly helps plan and run activities that encourage our youngest members to play, explore, create and learn together.

Whether it’s getting outdoors, trying a new skill or working towards a badge, Rolly is there to encourage our Squirrels to have a go and enjoy the experience. He helps create a friendly and welcoming environment where everyone can feel comfortable, make friends and take those first steps on their Scouting journey.

Squirrel Volunteer Vacancy

Assistant Squirrel Scout Leader & Parent Helper

If you are intrested in helping out the squirrel Scouts each week, please get in contact with us to see what role best fits you.

Volunteer Vacancies

Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. They give their time, energy and enthusiasm to create opportunities for young people to learn new skills, build confidence, make friends and enjoy adventures. From leading activities and camps to helping behind the scenes, every volunteer makes a difference. Without them, Scouting simply wouldn’t be possible - and we’re incredibly grateful for everything they do.

We work towards the Chief Scout Acorn Award

Every challenge is another chance to discover what you can do.

The Chief Scout’s Acorn Award is the highest award a Squirrel can earn. We support our Squirrels to work towards all four of their challenge awards, giving them plenty of opportunities to try new things, learn new skills and take on challenges along the way.

It’s not about being the best or racing to the finish. It’s about getting involved, having a go and seeing how far you can go. Every challenge completed is another step towards the Acorn Award - and another achievement to be proud of.

Earning challenge awards

Challenge awards are designed to do exactly what their name suggests - challenge you. They encourage Squirrels to try things they might not normally choose, develop new skills and take on experiences that help them grow in confidence.

Along the way, Squirrels might find themselves taking the lead, trying something completely new or discovering a talent they didn’t know they had. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn, grow and stand a little taller.

Activity badges

Our Squirrels can also work towards activity badges by getting involved in the things they enjoy outside of their regular meetings. These badges recognise the interests, hobbies and skills they’re developing in their everyday lives.

Whether they’re already passionate about something or want to discover a completely new interest, activity badges give Squirrels another reason to have a go and celebrate their progress. There’s a whole world of badges to explore, so there’s always something new to work towards.

How old are Squirrel Scouts?

Ages 4 to 6, with plenty of room to grow, explore and find their feet.

Squirrels is our youngest section, welcoming young people from 4 years old. It’s a chance to take those first steps into Scouting, make new friends and start discovering the skills, adventures and experiences that come with being part of the group.

Squirrels are generally aged between 4 and 6 years old, giving them time to grow in confidence and independence before moving on to Beavers. Every young person develops at their own pace, so we understand that moving between sections can be a big step and offer some flexibility when the time comes.

When your young person reaches 5¾, they can move on to Beavers when the time is right for them. However, all Squirrels will leave the drey when they turn 6 years old. We’ll help make that transition as smooth as possible, so they know what to expect and can look forward to their next adventure.

If your young person is under 4, there’s no need to wait. You can still add them to our New Member Waiting List, and we’ll be in touch when they’re old enough and we’re ready to offer them a place. Getting on the list early can help make sure they’re in the best position to join us when the time comes.

Join Squirrels at 1st Billesley Scout Group

Start their Scouting journey with new friends, new skills and plenty of adventures along the way.

Joining Squirrels is a great way for your young person to take their first steps into Scouting. They’ll have the chance to make friends, try new things and discover what they can do, all while being part of a welcoming group.

Squirrels is open to everyone, and we’ll always do our best to make sure every young person can take part. If your young person needs any support to get involved, get in touch with us. By talking early, we can work together to help make their experience the best it can be.

What you’ll need to join

The first step is to add your young person’s details to our New Member Waiting List. When they reach the right age and a space becomes available, we’ll get in touch and invite them to their first session.

Their group red polo shirt is included as part of the joining fee. You will need to order their uniform via the Scout Store before they get invested into their section.

Start something they’ll remember

By joining Scouts, your young person becomes part of a worldwide movement where they can build confidence, learn practical skills, make friends and experience new adventures. Their first two session's are free, giving them a chance to see what Squirrels is all about before deciding to join.

After this, a joining fee and membership fee will apply. We’ll share all the details with you before your young person joins us, so you know exactly what to expect.

Alternatively, if you have any questions, would like to arrange a visit or want to speak to a member of our team before deciding, you can get in touch with us using any of the options below.
