The Young Leaders Scheme

Building confidence, developing leadership skills and inspiring the next generation of Scouts.

Our Young Leaders at Shire ESU

The Young Leaders Scheme gives Explorers and young people aged 14–18 the opportunity to take an active role in supporting younger sections. It’s a chance to share their ideas, get involved with activities and help younger members learn, have fun and build their own Skills for Life.

Young Leaders work alongside our adult volunteers in Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, gaining valuable experience while developing confidence, communication, teamwork and leadership skills. Whether they’re helping run an activity, supporting a camp or simply being someone younger members can look up to, every contribution makes a difference.

The scheme is also a fantastic way to work towards the Young Leader Training Modules and missions, giving young people the opportunity to develop their skills and take on greater responsibility within Scouting. They don't need to be an expert or have previous leadership experience - our volunteer team will support them along the way.

Think you could be a Young Leader? Speak to a member of our leadership team to find out more about getting involved and becoming part of the team.

In order to be appart of the Young Leader Scheme you will need to be an Explorer Scout within our group or completing your DofE Bronze, Silver or Gold Award through Scouts or externally to volunteer with us for your set timeframe.

Being apart of the Young Leader Scheme at 325th Birmingham Scout Group has helped me gain confidence within Scouts and my work placements. The scheme has also aided me in navigating my career route in teaching.

Being a Young Leader gave me an edge when it came to applying for places at Sixth Form - my application stood out because of helping Scouts and my volunteering.
